Peach Please Ink - The Merging of Cultures Upon Skin
In this series of illustrations, the artist reimagines traditional Japanese imagery and symbolism with modern western feminist ideology. Historically (both in the USA and Japan), there is a very prevalent gender binary and social hierarchy in which men dominate. This series utilizes the peach as a representation of femininity to contradict the traditions. You will see stereotypically feminine hands rejecting the peach while more masculine hands embrace it.
This project was made possible with an undergraduate research grant through the UW-Whitewater Undergraduate Research Program. Along with the series of watercolor paintings, the program required a research paper along with a presentation of the project at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Kennesaw, Georgia on the Kennesaw State University campus. Temporary tattoos were distributed to the audience.
