Before settlers called it Madison, it’s called Teejop (day-jope) by the Ho Chunk. Each of our four lakes in the area were named by settlers using various indigenous names including words from Dakota, Sauk-Fox, and Ojibwa. Of course, the Ho Chunk people did indeed already have names for the great bodies of water. In the Ho Chunk language Hoocąk, Teejop means four lakes.
